Budget Tool
Start: 1546297200000
Duration: 6 months
In this project our team had to implement an improved version of an already existing but scarcely used tool for a global player. It encompassed both new features as well as a limited migration of old features and data. Most existing features had to be adapted or completely rewritten due to changes in the customers organisational hierarchies over the years.
The tool itself is used to plan budgets on various organizational levels such as factory/plant, department, region or global. The budgets would be requested by their respective responsibles and would be approved later in the process. Budget plannning had to be a continous process, so new data was expected each quarter. For reporting purposes automatic reports for planning and actual cost comparissons and other use cases had to automatically be generated and could be displayed by the tool or exported to excel or pdf.
The tool also had vast administration possibilities from the administration of the various organizational levels to a complex user rights and roles administration which determined who could use or see which functionality.
We implemented this tool using SCRUM and monthly customer visits. For the database migration a dedicated software architect was provided who also moderated spring meetings.
On the technology site we used ASP.NET MVC 5 in conjunction with razor pages (formerly ASP web forms) and KendoUI from Telerik. This lead to very modern and intuitive frontend design which was easily manageable with jQuery and the Kendo MVC controller extensions for backend communication. The styling of the components and general layout was done in LESS to more easily implement corporate styling like color codes as variables. Additionally data was stored and provided by a MS-SQL server which also opened up the possibility to use SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) to automatically generate various reports and implement them into the website. However it is worth mentioning that SSRS is a very old service and there are better options available. The project was designed in such a way that no hard dependencies on SSRS would exist so that porting to another service would be easily possible in the future.
This project was really great for me since I got to try out and learn a lot of new technologies. I was responsible for the prototyping work and research about KendoUI before the project started and enjoyed teaching my colleagues about my findings. This also allowed us to react to obstacles in our plannings early and ultimately led to a very well received product. This project, as well as all other projects at Bayoonet AG also had a rigourous quality assurance process and bug tracking. The project was organised using Team Foundation Server which is now Azure Dev Ops.
